Metta Prayer

May all beings be peaceful.
May all beings be happy.
May all beings be safe.
May all beings awaken to the light of their true nature.
May all beings be free.

A never-ending Metta Prayer entwines this finely engraved Möbius form bracelet. Metta is the Pali word for lovingkindness, a sense of deep caring for ourselves and all other beings. Like Metta, the Möbius shape has no beginning and no end. A constant reminder to open your heart. Bracelet is 1/4" at widest point, 8 3/4" around. Made in USA. 14k gold. Exclusive to our catalog.

Please note: this bracelet is a bangle with no opening and must slide over your hand onto your wrist. We recommend that you cut a piece of paper 8 3/4" to measure your hand and wrist prior to ordering.

About the Möbius strip

A Möbius strip is a geometrical figure that appears to have two surfaces; but in reality, it has only one side and one edge. This idea can best be illustrated by cutting a sheet of paper, twisting it 180 degrees in the center, and then fastening the two free edges together with tape or glue.

Make your own Mobius strip
Make your own Möbius strip using the longer edge of a sheet of 8 ½" x 11" paper. Cut about an inch-wide strip from the paper (resulting in a 1" x 11" rectangle). Twist the band of paper in the middle 180 degrees. Tape or glue the edges together and you've created a Möbius band.

Now, the common visualization technique has been to imagine that you are an ant and you alight on the Möbius strip. You began to follow the path in front of you around the strip. Even though you appear to cross to the "outside" of the strip, you have never left the same path or the same surface. Or, try drawing a line down the center of the strip to verify that there is indeed only one side to the bracelet. You can also imagine that you are the "Metta Prayer," and that the lovingkindness you wish for yourself and for others has no beginning and no end—you're a continuous prayer of compassion.

The Möbius strip was named for August Ferdinand Möbius (1790 - 1868), a mathematician and astronomer. Mobius was not the first to discover the geometrical phenomena, nor was he was the first to publish his findings. German mathematician Johann Benedict Listing (1808-1882) actually discovered the planal surface in July 1858 and published his discovery in 1861. However, the credit and the naming of the discovery went to Möbius, and it has been a Möbius strip ever since.

Möbius strips are not only fascinating, but they are useful as well. The "one-sidedness" of the strip lent itself to advances in engineering - in the film, audio, and the manufacturing industry. Because a belt or filmstrip fashioned into a Möbius strip wore evenly on both "sides," wear and tear was prolonged, giving longer life to the mechanisms that utilized them. Conveyor belts are probably the most common example of this application.

Möbius strips have also been inspiration for works of art, including a drawing by M.C. Escher. DharmaCrafts is pleased to offer this exclusive inspirational bracelet, both in sterling silver and 14k gold, which transforms the Möbius strip into a beautiful symbol of eternal love.
