Rebuilding Nepal Through Trade

In the aftermath of the massive earthquake that struck Nepal in April 2015, DharmaCrafts launched a project to aid the victims of this tragic disaster. Due to your support of Nepalese artisans and Rebuilding Nepal through Trade, DharmaCrafts was able to donate $12,224.00 to relief efforts. We are very happy that together we were able to benefit the victims of this terrible disaster. A large percentage of the donation went to Roshi Joan Halifax's Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund (NERF) set up through Upaya Zen Center and to the Save the Children Fund.

Although our Nepal initiative has officially ended, we encourage you to support Nepalese artisans and their families by purchasing products marked with the prayer flag icon shown above.

Soothing, fragrant sandalwood is combined with lapis to create this strong, yet light-weight mala. Sandalwood is thought to attract positive energy and promote tranquility. Lapis is the gemstone associated with the Medicine Buddha.

8mm sandalwood beads with 10mm lapis guru bead and markers. Made in USA.

Materials: 8mm sandalwood beads; 10mm lapis guru bead and markers; traditional Tibetan protection knot tassel

Made in USA

Mala means “garland” in Sanskrit. A mala is a strand of prayer beads, much like a rosary, used to count repetitions of mantras and prostrations. A traditional mala is made of 108 beads because each mantra recitation is said to purify one of the 108 levels of mind. A hand mala is made with 18-27 beads, usually a multiple of 108.

Stretchy wrist malas are often worn as a reminder to practice mantra at all times. Stretchy wrist malas may vary in the number of beads but may still be used for mantra practice. Wearing a stretchy mala is especially convenient for a person who is ill and would like to recite mantra in bed; the stretchy wrist mala is always right there on their wrist. Today people often wear stretchy malas as a reminder to be mindful.

Sandalwood is thought to attract positive energy and promote tranquility. Sandalwood has been used for incense since ancient times. Its calming scent is suitable for meditation and devotional practices.

Lapis is the gemstone associated with the Medicine Buddha. The blue in some rare ancient Tibetan thangkas was made of ground-up lapis. The Medicine Buddha, the embodiment of healing energy, is described to be the blue color of lapis lazuli.
