Traditionally-styled Japanese water basin is carved from a solid piece of grey granite. The tall, deeply hollowed garden basin is shaped like the tea jar (natsume) used for tea ceremony. Water basins were introduced as sculptural elements in the Japanese tea garden by tea masters during the 16th century. The basin was sited along the path leading to the tea house so guests could purify their hands and mouths before partaking in the ritual tea ceremony.
