What is your position on doing business with China?

As a socially responsible, Buddhist business, DharmaCrafts enthusiastically upholds and supports the Tibetan people's struggle for self-determination and freedom as well as the preservation of Tibetan culture. Additionally, we support the work of Tibetan artists and craftspeople living in exile.

We do not support the Chinese Government's oppressive regime and we will not purchase products produced in prisons and labor camps in Tibet, or in large government-run factories in China that use forced or child labor.

As more and more of our long-term vendors are moving their manufacturing operations to China, we felt it necessary to contact the Tibetan Government in Dharamsala, India, to request the position of His Holiness the Dalai Lama regarding the purchase of goods made in China.

We believe our position to be aligned with that of His Holiness' with respect to doing business with China, as written below.

The following letter was emailed to DharmaCrafts from the Tibetan government in exile.

November, 2003

Thank you for your inquiry addressed to the International Campaign for Tibet on His Holiness the Dalai Lama's position on doing business with China. Mr. Bhuchung Tsering, the director of ICT, has forwarded the query to us.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama's thinking on doing business with China is based on two considerations. One is that he does not want to do anything that may harm the livelihood of the vast majority of the ordinary Chinese masses. On the other hand, products and goods made by prisoners and children through force labour is not acceptable.

I hope this will be of some help to you.

Yours sincerely,

Thubten Samphel
Secretary
Department of Information and International Relations
Central Tibetan Administration
Dharamsala, India
