Our New Home—Our Commitment
In March 2006, DharmaCrafts moved to Lawrence, MA, an historic mill city struggling to rebuild and reinvent itself. Once a thriving city and the hub of the U.S. textile industry, the City of Lawrence has never recovered from the devastating economic decline it suffered when the mills began to close in the 1960's. Despite having one of the poorest populations in New England and suffering from years of disinvestment and decline, Lawrence is showing signs of renewal, including a growing, vibrant population of immigrants, and public and private investments are now beginning to flow into the city.

The more we learn about the City of Lawrence, the more we feel compelled to reach out to the people and use DharmaCrafts as a vehicle for positive social change within our new community. We invite you, our Dharma friends, to join us.

Groundwork Lawrence
Groundwork Lawrence

With the motto, "Changing Places, Changing Lives," the Green Team and the Lawrence Outdoor Youth Corps employ school students to monitor local ecosystems, as well as direct environmental service-learning projects. While learning new skills and environmental studies, Lawrence teens also learn that they are an integral part of the eco-system of the city, and that they have the power to make an impact on their own neighborhood.

The youth environmental programs offered by Groundwork Lawrence are crucial in providing healthy role models for kids, and encouraging them to consider higher education. Teens learn leadership skills, environmental stewardship, and work responsibility, while earning money for college. Teens in these programs are often the first in their family to attend college, or receive a high school diploma.. The programs are funded by grants, scholarships, and outside donations, so each contribution to this program has a direct correlation on the number of students who may participate.
