Lanterns were introduced into gardens in the 16th century by the Japanese tea masters. This traditional Japanese garden lantern is well-placed at the junction of paths, near a water basin, or at the edge of a pond or stream. Cast from a mixture of volcanic ash and a cement-like material, it is designed to hold a votive candle for illumination.
