The shakuhachi flute with its evocative sound is the musical embodiment of the Zen meditation tradition. Made from the root of madake bamboo, the shakuhachi, with only five finger holes, looks like a simple folk instrument. Yet, in the hands of a master, the shakuhachi produces a wide range of sounds, as expressive as the human voice.
Here, Riley Lee, the first non-Japanese dai shihan (grand master) of the shakuhachi tradition, performs six original shakuhachi compositions, accompanied by Bert Moon on the koto, a 13-string Japanese zither.
