The Sanskrit name of this Great Bodhisattva is Kshitigarbha, which means "womb of the earth." Each Jizo is a unique work of art designed by Jan Chozen Bays Roshi and cast of richly glazed, lead free ceramic by her students at Great Vow Zen Monastery in Oregon. Peeking Jizo holds a baby in his arms, while a small child peeks out from beneath his robe. Child Jizo holds a wishfulfilling jewel. A statue of Jizo is a welcome gift for a family expecting the birth of a child or for a family whose child has died.
Blue glaze statues signify the Jizo who safely guides those who are crossing over from the world of the living to the world of the dead. Green glaze statues represent the Earthstore Bodhisattva who is guardian of the precious Buddha Nature which lies hidden in each one of us until it is cultivated through sincere practice.
