The graceful, fan-shaped leaves of the hardy ginko tree have been a recurring motif in Asian art throughout the centuries. The ginko tree is revered as both a symbol of the sacred life force of yin and yang, and for its longevity and vitality. Some existing ginko trees are thousands of years old. The ginko is known to survive catastrophic events better than most other living organisms. In fact, four ginko trees survived the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima in 1945. As a result, the ginko has become a symbol of hope and peace.
